Amavasya is also known as no Moon Day or New Moon Day. Amavasya or No moon night, is the darkest time of a month. Amavasya marks the beginning of Shukla Paksha, or the bright fortnight, of the lunar month. It is belived by many that on this day no auspisious activity should be done. It is also believed that if one starts anything new on this day then that work may never be successful. Many people even refrain from planning a journey on this.
Amavasya can be defined as a perfect time for remembering our ancestors and other members of our family and worshipping their soul. Amavasya holds great religious significance in the Hindu culture. On this day it is believed that our forefathers come down to the earth and visit their children and descendants.
In the Vishnu dharma shastras this day is treated as pitrus (Spirit of the ancestors). On this day people feel that everything is at extreme, for example- people who are mentally imbalanced from before tend to feel more imbalanced on this day. It is believed that when Moon comes in between the earth and then sun, the Moon then becomes invisible, this is officially termed as New Moon. Speaking in astrological sense the sun and moon come together in the same degree in the same sign. Generally, 0-12 degree is Known as Amavasya.
Idealy if we consider the moon to be a person’s mind and the Sun be ones Atman then the ultimate aim of human being should be to bring them together. This state is often called Samadhi and since on this New Moon, both sun and then moon in the sky come in a close proximity, bound by the nature of our mind and soul also have the capability to come together. Thus, it is said that on this day all the unusual activities happen in our body because the mind and soul are attempting to come close into each other. It is also believed that the strength of evil spirits and black magic tend to increase more than usual on Amavasya.
Many people worship Goddess Kali and Lord Shiva on this day as it is believed that they destroy any kind of evil spirit or shadow of evil in our surroundings. Some people also observe fast on this day with a belief that their wishes will come true and they also believe the performing same will help them absolve their sins. Just like a coin has two different sides, every phase of moon also has two very different side.
As per astrology the day of Amavasya is considered to be very beneficial to offer shraddha to our ancestors and pray to god that he frees them from all kinds of negative energies. Also, on this day human tend to attract more energy from other planets on Amavasya in other to tackle the negative energy in their surroundings. When Amavasya falls on a Monday, and if a fast is undertaken on this day, then it is believed to ensure freedom from widowhood and it also ensures a prosperous progeny.
It is believed that fasting on Amavasya can rid one of past sins and give peace of mind.
